Living vs. Non-Living Things

All living things share six characteristics:

  1. They are made of cells
  2. They grow and develop
  3. They use energy (food)
  4. They respond to their environment
  5. They reproduce (make more of themselves)
  6. They release waste

A rock, a toy, and water are non-living — they do none of these things. A tree, a fish, and a mushroom are all living.
