Sight Words
Sight words are the most common words in written English. Because many do not follow regular phonics rules, we memorize them by sight. Knowing these words makes reading much faster.
Why Sight Words Matter
Research shows that just 100 words make up about half of all words we read. Recognizing them instantly â without sounding out each letter â frees your brain to focus on meaning.
The Big Payoff
Students who can read sight words automatically read more fluently and with better comprehension.

Strategies for Learning Sight Words
Since many sight words can't be sounded out, use these strategies:
- Flash cards: Write the word on one side, a picture/sentence on the other
- Trace and write: Trace the word in salt, sand, or on paper several times
- Word wall: Display words where you can see them every day
- Find it in books: Hunt for sight words when reading
- Rainbow writing: Write the word multiple times in different colors
Practice Tip
Aim to read each word in under 1 second. Time yourself with a set of 10 flash cards daily.
